Mountains and Lakes of Mid Wales

Llyn Clywedog
Llyn Clywedog viewed from the road to Machynlleth Llyn Clywedog
5 Miles from Llanidloes. The headwaters which flow into the reservoir arise on the mountains of Pumlumon. The Dam was built to regulate the flow of the Clywedog River to ensure a constant supply of water along the river Severn.
Surface Area is 615 acres
Max Depth is 216 Ft.
Overall Length is 6 miles
12 miles of bank fishing.
Easy walking along the shores and several way marked routes: The Llyn Clywedog Scenic Trail, Clywedog Gorge Trail and Aber Biga Wildlife Walk. At the base of the dam are the remains of Bryn Tail Lead Mine. From this point the wall of the dam rises up 237feet above the river!

The Elan Valley Lakes

The Elan Valley Lakes, set in 70 square miles of the Elan Valley Estate, are three miles from the A470 at Rhayader. Stunning views and wildlife. The Claerwen, Caban-coch, Garreg-ddu, Penygarreg, and Craig Goch Reservoirs supply Birmingham with water. There is a scenic 17 mile circular drive around the shores of the lakes or you can return via Devils Bridge.
Starting at the Visitor Center are cycle routes, bridle ways and a variety of way marked walks, some just an easy stroll and some more challenging. Rangers lead some interesting themed historical and wildlife walks. See events on the Diary page. The whole Estate is open access but it is probably safer to keep to the marked paths.Visitor Center

Standing under Elan Valley Dam Brown trout fishing is available on the reservoirs and the Rivers Wye, Marteg and Elan. The Welsh Open Bank Fishing Competition has been held here for many years, usually in July. Carriage Driving Trips available too. CARRIAGE DRIVING

Caban Coch in November Nant y Moch and Dinas
Off the beaten track these two reservoirs provide a quiet scenic drive back from Aberystwyth. From Tallybont near Borth the narrow road with passing places rises steeply to meander around the reservoirs and return to the main road at Pont-erwyd.
