Walking in Mid Wales



We keep a variety of local maps and walks at Cwm Deildre so please ask for help.

Cwm Deildre is surrounded by lovely walks with stunning views. Many of the lanes are gated which keeps traffic to a bare minimum.

The Sarn Sabrina Walk
A challenging 25mile circular walk from Llanidloes via the Llyn Clywedog, Hafren forest and the Source of the Severn. The route passes by Cwm Deildre.

The Severn Way
210 miles Pumlumon to Bristol
Cwm Deildre is not far from the source of the Severn. The Severn Way passes through the Hafren Forest and the last leg starts from the car park there 7miles - 4 ½ hours
You can walk to the Hafren Forest directly from Cwm Deildre
Llanidloes has express coaches and a regular bus service to the station at Newtown.
A railway line runs roughly parallel to the Way between Caersws and Telford, with stations at Newtown, Welshpool and Shewsbury, and services to Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Shrewbury also has rail services to Crewe, Chester, Liverpool, Hereford and to Llanelli along the scenic Heart of Wales Line. Between Bridgnorth and Bewdley the Way is paralleled by the independent Severn Valley Railway with services to Kidderminster.

Glyndwrs Way
Along distance walk named after Owain Glyndwr the Welsh Warrior Statesman of the early fifteenth century. Locally there are 15 sections of between 5 and 12 miles from Knighton via Llanidloes and Machynlleth to Welshpool. Glyndwr's Way passes close by Cwm Deildre. Hafren Forest
There are walks of various length and difficulty including one suitable for wheelchair users.
Toilets available from Easter to October and riverside picnic site.
All ability cascades walk ½ mile ½ hour
Severn Break the Neck 1 1/2miles 1 hour
Blaenhafren Falls 3 miles 1 ½ hours

Wye Valley Walk
136 miles Pumlumon Mountains to Chepstow
This walk is in its last (or first) stages as it goes through Llangurig on its way to the source of the river which is 6 miles from Llangurig in the Pumlumon Mountains.

Elan Trail Elan Valley Lakes
Ten mile linear cycle and walking surfaced route along three reservoirs.
Accompanied walks, Bug Hunts, Dam Busters Walk, waymarked walks of various terrain and difficulty.
This complex is well worth a visit. There is 70acre of open access around magnificent scenery and wildlife including peregrine falcons. The dams in winter are even more stunning than in the summer. Information: 01597-810898/826605

Cwm Rheidol Nature Trail around the Rheidol Reservoir
Red Trail - 1hr 15mins 2miles - Pleasant flat walk along the road from the visitor center.
Green Trail 1hr 30mins 2 ¾ miles Further walk up to the waterfall and fish ladder.
Blue Trail 1hr 45mins 3 miles A steeper climb with fine views over the Rheidol Valley

Radnor Forest Walk
Walk to the summit of the forest at 2,166ft above sea level.
